History

Shaped by childhood hardships of war, severe hunger, and the early loss of a parent, George Dragas developed a deep sense of empathy for others in need and instilled an unwavering sense of integrity and spirit of philanthropy into the values of the company he founded and the children he raised.

From its beginning as Dragas Mortgage Company in 1968, George Dragas established the company to help local families experience the pride of homeownership. Seeing people achieve the American dream of owning their own home led naturally to a partnership with his brother Mark to develop and build homes in Hampton Roads. Under the new name of Dragas Companies, George and Mark broke ground on their first condominium development, Virginia Beach’s Birdneck North, in 1978. It was the beginning of a commitment not to simply build homes, but to build neighborhoods of enduring beauty.

The Dragas Companies’ name quickly came to be known for integrity and quality. Never wavering from this ideal, The Dragas Companies of today has welcomed more than 8,000 families—and counting—to our communities, while our office parks provide appealing, professional space for businesses in the Virginia Beach region.

As its second-generation leader, Helen E. Dragas has advanced George’s original intentions of helping families experience the pride of homeownership with a focus on innovation and customer service. Under her leadership, The Dragas Companies has received dozens of civic, government, and industry awards, including the prestigious America’s Best Builder Award from Builder magazine.

Our commitment to our homebuyers and our community is a deeply ingrained aspect of our company culture and we are proud to continue George Dragas’ vision for Dragas Companies.
