Dragas donates 50 reading kits to the Boys and Girls Club
The Dragas Companies is donating 50 summer reading kits to the Boys and Girls Club of Southeast Virginia and 50 camping kits to kids attending summer camp hosted by ForKids Inc., a local nonprofit group fighting homelessness.
The first Boys and Girls Club dropoff is set for Wednesday, July 11 at 1 p.m., at the Boys and Girls Club on Rosemont Road.
"These donations are part of an effort to help Hampton Roads children avoid the 'summer slide' by staying active and engaged throughout summer vacation," said Sally Horvath, company vice president. “ 'Summer slide' is the learning loss that occurs over summer break, when kids are out of school. Students affected by summer slide are often from low-income households and begin the next school year at a lower academic level than when the summer started. Differences in children’s summer learning experiences in elementary school can even impact whether they graduate from high school and continue to college."
The ForKids camping bags of gear include all of the essentials needed for a summer sleep-away camp, including an overnight bag, sleeping bag, swimsuit, a pillow and pillowcase, bug spray, sunscreen, wash cloth, toiletries and a beach towel.
“Some of our kids never get to leave their neighborhood and too often spend their summers in shelters and in chaotic, overcrowded apartments,” said Thaler McCormick, CEO of ForKids. “This gift from The Dragas Companies helps our kids to get away, see nature and enjoy the summer, just like other children. They help us show our kids that there is so much possibility in the world."
Dragas' top leader says all kids need activities and recreation when they're out of school.
“Whether through reading fun books or attending summer camp, all children need ways to keep growing during the summer,” said Helen Dragas, president and CEO of Virginia Beach-based The Dragas Companies. “We’re proud to support the nonprofits in our community that are making strides against 'summer slide' for the children of Hampton Roads."
Earlier this year, Dragas sponsored the ForKids annual art auction and it plans to help ForKids at back-to-school time later this year, said Horvath.
"These donations are part of an ongoing commitment by Dragas to help the children in our region," she said.
